01

Check-in

02

Supported treatment

You rest on your side, cushioned with pillows, while your therapist works the areas carrying the most load. Pressure stays comfortable and you can change position any time.

03

After your session

Gentle suggestions for easing pressure between visits, and a comfortable spacing for follow-ups if the aches are a regular part of your week.

About prenatal massage in Burnaby

Prenatal massage, sometimes called pregnancy massage, is registered massage therapy adapted for a changing body. Instead of lying face down, you are positioned on your side and supported with pillows, which keeps you and the baby comfortable while your therapist reaches the low back, hips and shoulders that take the strain.

It is safe at any stage, including the first trimester, and many patients keep coming through the third trimester when pelvic girdle pain, sciatic discomfort and swelling tend to peak. Because your therapist is registered with the College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia, pregnancy massage is usually claimable under your extended health plan the same as any other treatment.

The same care carries over once your baby arrives. Postpartum massage helps with the neck, shoulder and upper back tension that comes from feeding and carrying, once you are cleared to return.

Who it is for

Anyone who is pregnant and dealing with aches, tightness or swelling, at any trimester. Useful again postpartum once you have the go-ahead to come back in.

Let us know your due date and anything your midwife or doctor has raised when you book, so your therapist can position and pace the session for you. If your pregnancy is high risk, a quick word with your care provider first is a good idea.

Common questions

Is prenatal massage safe in the first trimester?

Yes. Massage is safe throughout pregnancy when it is done by a registered therapist who adapts the position and pressure. We keep you side-lying and supported the whole time.

Do I lie on my stomach?

No. You rest on your side, cushioned with pillows, which is comfortable for you and the baby and still lets your therapist reach the areas that ache.

Will my extended health plan cover it?

In most cases, yes. It is delivered by a CMTBC registered massage therapist, so it is claimable like any other registered massage, and we direct bill most major providers.

How soon after birth can I come back?

Once you have clearance from your care provider. Postpartum massage is a good reset for the neck, shoulders and upper back that take on so much with a newborn.
